Make Yourself a Priority

In this day and age, we are always rushing, rushing, rushing. Trying to get a million things done, ticking off that to do list, fulfilling multiple life roles… It is a constant juggle. There is just never enough hours in the day. But with all that rushing around, comes neglect. There is a cost to this way of working and living, and it’s you and your body! Pain whilst working is not normal, nor should it be acceptable. It does not have to be this way.

When it comes to looking after yourself whilst working, it doesn’t have to take a long time. There are many simple things you can be doing each day to change your experience of pain. Check out these quick tips which only take a few seconds to implement and they won’t cost you a thing:

  • Ensure you and your workstation is well set-up before you start working with correct positioning and alignment.
  • If you have moved your keyboard out of the way to complete another other task, make sure you reposition it correctly in front of you before using it again.
  • Take short breaks every half hour, change position and use this as an opportunity to let your body re-set itself.
  • Before starting work after a break, check your workstation set up again. Is your mouse and keyboard correctly positioned and are you centred to the monitor?
  • When heading out in the car, take a brief moment to check your posture, sitting position and ensure you are not overreaching for the steering wheel. The cumulative effects of this sort of stuff will only serve to give you a pain in the neck by the end of your drive.
  • Be posturally aware and make adjustments and corrections as needed to your position.
  • Finally, ask yourself this simple question before you start any task – Could I be doing this in a different way to better look after myself?
