Today’s tip for staying comfortable behind the wheel is some general advice which can be applied when driving.
- Make sure to remove mobile phones, wallets and anything else from your back pockets. Not only is this uncomfortable but will help put your back out of alignment due to the awkward positioning of your pelvis.
- Where possible, sit with your knees at 90 degrees, this helps to decrease pressure on your lower back. Your posture is always better if your feet are well supported. When driving longer distances, this can be achieved using cruise control.
- Listen to your body and make adjustments to your posture and position as needed.
- Take frequent rest breaks - at minimum every 2 hours or more frequently if needed. Take a few minutes to get out of the car, take a short walk and stretch. It might add an extra 5 minutes or so to your journey but you will thank yourself when you reach your destination and are still able to move!
- If you can – share the drive.
Hopefully the tips I have posted over the past few days is going to help you stay comfortable behind the wheel this silly season. I have a three hour journey coming up with my two young children, Indie (our dog) and I will be the only driver. I will be doing everything I can to get to the other end safely, without my body paying the price. Take the time to get it right before you start driving. And most importantly stay safe on the roads.
