Apologies in advance, I am about to have a bit of a rant! As an entrepreneur, in working with my business mentor I have done plenty of work around how I define success. How I define success comes from my own experiences, my values and what I want for the future. Each of us defines success very differently.
I recently heard the following statement “success is painful” from a self-employed friend who was in conversation with someone else who is self-employed. This statement was very disturbing to me. Although both of these individuals are building successful businesses, they both suffer with pain which is associated with their work and thus their bodies are paying the price of their success.
Whichever way you like to refer to yourself: entrepreneur, business owner or self-employed, the story is very much the same. You work long hours, day after day (sometimes for year after year) trying to build a business (hopefully one you are passionate about) that will help you to achieve the success you desire, often sacrificing yourself and your own wellbeing.
One of the most concerning things to me about individuals who work for themselves, is the straight-out acceptance that pain is a normal and is part and parcel of working for oneself. I know I certainly did not become self-employed so that pain could interfere with my work and everyday life. The way I see it is why on earth would you want to be working so hard for yourself, putting in all those long hours to create the life you dream of, to then not be able to fully enjoy it because of pain?
The reality is that it does not have to be this way. Looking after yourself while working doesn’t have to be complicated and it is not all about spending big bucks on fancy equipment either. I can empower you with the knowledge, skills and tools to take back control of work related pain, so you can take action now, to enable you to enjoy the success you are working so hard to achieve.
If you got nothing else from this post, please take these last words away with you: Your definition of success should NOT involve pain!
